When people find out that we foster dogs for Vizsla Rescue (Colorado/Wyoming Vizsla Rescue Group, Inc.), the first thing that they ask is, “Isn’t that hard?” or “how can you give them up?” or “I could never do that.” Yes, it is hard to “give away” a dog that you have been loving and had in your home. Yes, we get very attached, and yes, it is hard to know if someone will take good care of the dog.
But having a family like the MacDonalds adopt your foster dog makes it a very rewarding experience. The moment they walked in the door, Vanessa was covered in kisses, pats, and hugs. They couldn’t stop smiling, and Vanessa couldn’t get close enough to them. After a while, I let Indy and Karma out so they could get the whole 5280 Vizsla experience, and as always happens when people see Indy, Shawn commented on how handsome he is. I knew we found the right home when their daughter said, “he’s nice, but I like Vanessa better.” Out of the mouths of babes. It warmed my heart to know that just after a 30 minute visit, Vanessa was already the world’s greatest dog in the eyes of her 3 year old owner.
As we filled out the adoption paperwork, Vanessa nudged Jill’s free hand for an ear scratch. I had to smile. A day ago, that would have been my hand Vanessa was aching for, but today Vanessa knew she had a new family full of love to give her. She is their dog, and she knew it instantly. As I looked through the camera lens for their adoption photo, I saw a new family smiling back at me. Hopefully, the smiles in the photo up top speak for themselves and explain the joy that comes from helping a family find their perfect dog.
We love you Vanessa! And we are so happy you have the perfect home 🙂
