Marc has Thursdays off, so he was able to spend the morning with Garrett and an Orthopedic Specialist Veterinarian in Ft. Collins. On the agenda? Garrett needed follow-up x-rays to determine if he would need surgery to fix his fractured pelvis.
Rita Prindle (CWVRG, Inc.) was nice enough to schedule the appointment for us, and was even able immediately to speak with the Vet once she could look at Garrett’s films. After a lengthy call with Rita and a very comprehensive visit with the Vet, Marc and Gare headed back home to the rest of the gang. Marc’s remark about the x-rays when he called to update Jenny, “he has a gnarly fracture.” So not good, poor Gare 🙁
It looks like surgery is inevitable at this point. There are three different orthopedic specialists going over Garrett’s films, and we are waiting to see what their recommendation will be. Several of Garrett’s smaller fractures have healed, but his left hind leg muscle has totally atrophied. And the kicker is — he shows no pain, a good reminder that dogs are VERY resilient, and don’t always show us how much (if they show any!) pain they are feeling.
So it looks like Garrett won’t be able to go to his forever home any time soon, which is totally okay with us! We’ve ordered him his own embroidered stocking and we made a paw-print ornament for our tree. And if any of you have seen our Christmas card, you’ll notice that Garrett wears the biggest smile in our home 🙂
