We are lucky that our dogs are shotgun-broken and don’t respond to the booming sounds of a gun, or on the 4th of July, a firework. Even Schmav has become immune to the booming — that’s what having bird-dog siblings will do for a poodle!
However, the 4th of July is apparently the most common day for dogs to run away. We even sent a note to Vanessa’s parents to keep an extra close eye on her over the holiday, as we weren’t sure how she would react. Turns out Vanessa did great on the 4th and even starred in the kid’s parade with McKinzie!
But yesterday, as Marc was driving home from work, he saw a dog crossing 6th Avenue (6th is 5 lanes of traffic at this location!) He pulled over, checked the dog for injuries, and then headed home. The dog had no collar on, but was pretty overweight, so we knew he was loved. We wanted to make sure we had him scanned at a no-kill shelter for a micro-chip, but they were already closed for the evening. So Chico (as we now know he is named) got to spend the evening with our pack and curled up with Marc at bedtime.
Today, between his patients, Marc was checking Craigslist for a posting on a lost Chihuahua. And we lucked out! There was a matching description and photo of Chico. We learned from the ad that Chico is 11 years old, and as we thought, he was frightened by the fireworks and took off.
Chico’s parents came to pick him up after work. Tears were filling their eyes when Marc came out and asked, “is this your dog?” It was their Chico! Chico’s mom had been very worried and even said that Chico was the son she never had. We know exactly how that feels. We are so happy to be part of this happy reunion and hope this serves as a reminder to keep collars on your dogs!
